Google Earth prompts Indian fears
Posted on February 7th, 2007 at 3:51 am by emmaro and

Hey Everyody!

In Social Studies we are working on Current Event articles where every class some one has to present a important incedent that had happend over the last month.

Here is my summary of the article:

As you all know Google Earth is a downloadable program where you can see the Earth from a range of 15cm to 15m. Google is also making their program more modern by having 3D effects.

Though, citing security in India has been worrying about the details in Google Earth, therefore, Google has been having meetings with the Indian government to discuss which sites are too sensitive to show on Google Earth. They included military basses and government buildings.  The government is making a list of the places that are too sensitive to be viewed via Google Earth. Many of these areas have already been blurred on Google Earth. Google said that they are glad that they have talked it over, though there has not been any decisions made yet, and that they will continue talking until the problem is solved. The Indian government wants to blur some sights because they are scared that terrorists can get too much detail from it.

The images that Google Earth uses are often made by the government or other agencies, and they already blur them before giving them to Google. In exceptional circumstances Google Earth will also blur images. Because Google Earth has blurred some sights, it has encouraged more people to spot those locations.

hey, emma. I enjoyed reading your summary to the article and I would like to comment some things…
I think your summary is very good because you changed the words from the original artical into your own words whice were more specific and clear to understand. I also think that it is good because you included all of the important ideas. However, I think the last paragraph talks about something that is not very appropriate because I thought that your current event was about India worrying about too much information exposed in google earth. Therefore, I think you have to put the last sentence in between the first and second paragraph, which is before you talk about India. I think that will make more sense.
Good Job!

hey Emma, I liked topic a lot and your summery was very easy to understand even though I did not know anything about this news. Also, your presentation was good, because you had a map of India. Good job!

alright..the article you choose was very true and is a common problem for countries to have. I think they should blur some sights out because America is also doing the same thing. Some areas where their weapons are army camps are, are blurred out.
If you don’t blur the spaces out anyone could fire a weapon at you that would effect your country and maybe others the most.
Anyway, nice article and presentation

Hi Emma,

There is a always limitations to what should be made public and what should be kept confidential for security purposes. My first thought was if a “bad” person wanted to find a certain place, it would still be easy to find considering that only certain locations are blurred. Weird! I’m glad I don’t have a job dealing with security. Perhaps next time, you should include the impact that this has on India and/or the world.

Hi Emma,
I liked your topic and the way you presented it.I am from India and I know the urgency of it. For security measures, countries need to do it. However, I wished it was not there. It would have certainly increased knowledge of viewers. But due to several terrorist attacks, I guess we have no options
